QUEENSLAND BREWERIES BLACKFLAG &
WHITE LIES MOVE IN TOGETHER
“When it comes to business growth, the solution for us was ‘black and white’. Let’s collaborate rather than compete.”
In an exciting development for Queensland craft beer and spirits lovers, long time friends and collaborators Blackflag Brewing and White Lies Brewing & Distillery have taken their relationship to a new level, with a new co-habiting arrangement across their Brisbane and Sunshine Coast venues.
“How do I describe this?” said Lee McAlister-Smiley, founder of Brisbane based White Lies, which operates venues in Sumner Park and Seventeen Mile Rocks. “We’ve been looking for opportunities to build a presence for our range of premium beers and spirits on the Sunshine Coast for a while now. We’ve worked with the Blackflag team on different projects for years and really admire what they’ve built up there. When it turned out they were also keen to do more in Brisbane, it just made sense to pool our resources and work together”.
Steve Barber, CEO of Blackflag Brewing, based in Coolum and Mooloolaba, outlined “It’s not a formal joint venture or merger, but more an example of likeminded businesses partnering to make the most of their respective venues, assets and purchasing power. We’ve been long time friends and collaborators, and believe we can each bring something unique to each other’s business. Lee is an absolute legend of the beer industry, an award winning brewer and distiller who brings hard earned expertise and knowledge to the table. We’re stoked to be working together in this way.”
Brewing Chaos & Mayhem Since 2025
Under the new arrangement, beer and spirits from both Blackflag and White Lies will be featured prominently at each of their respective venues, and visitors can expect a packed calendar of taproom events, launch parties, and even music festivals. Barber continued
“Both White Lies and Blackflag like to throw pretty wild parties and we can’t wait to see what sort of mayhem we can come up with now.”
Each venue will act as a local hub for both brands, allowing customers to purchase their favourite Blackflag or White Lies beverages or merch, or pick up their orders locally and enjoy from home.
“There’s also going to be a big focus on community” said McAlister-Smiley. “Both brands have each built deep connections into their local areas, and we’ll be working on ways we can expand upon these initiatives with a joint effort”.
